September and October

Catching up once again. We continue to stay busy with all of our responsibilities and interests. Seems like we have done a lot since my last post.
When I got back from my second stint in Silver City, we made a trip to Ely for Blake's (My sister's baby) blessing over labor day weekend. It was a pretty special trip because Gpa Fred and Gma Margie were able to make the trip. They were not able to come to the Ely reception last year and then our Thanks Giving 2008 plans were ruined by Margie's heart attack. I was so happy to see them and even more grateful that Katie was able to meet them for the first time. The cherry on top was a big BYU wind over Oklahoma.
As soon as we returned home Katie headed to Pocatello to take the GRE. She spent a lot of time studying and practicing which ultimately paid off because she met and exceeded the minimums she needs for ISU grad school. The next day she started her last semester at BYU-I.
I surprised Katie with an early Christmas/Graduation present. It was a used Left Handed Browning A-bolt 30.06 hunting rifle. It was a good deal so I jumped on it. She shoots with her left eye so I had been looking for a gun that would work better for her. She loved the gun and was SO surprised when she pulled it out of the case thinking it was her old gun.
My dad came up at the end of September to scout for his Oct. 1st Bull Elk hunt. He ended up shooting a real nice 6x6 330 gross scoring bull on the second day of the hunt. Katie and I went up the next day and helped him break camp so we could get set up for the deer hunt by Malad that opened the following weekend.
We set up camp at my in-laws ranch house. It was so nice because we were able to hook up to the power at the house. We had seen a lot of deer during the scout so I felt pretty confident that Katie would have some opportunities opening morning of the hunt.
She did have opportunities but I don't know if you would call them good ones. TOO MANY PEOPLE!!! We were able to get on a real nice buck but it was a little too far. Katie got down and ready and took one shot as the deer ran over the hill. 330 yards moving is a pretty tough shot for anyone. I wanted so bad for her to get it, (bigger than anything I have ever shot) but even though she missed I was so proud of her getting into position and taking a shot. She did so well all day as we went on a marathon death march chasing deer around the mountains having our stalks continually foiled by other hunters.
We finally tracked down another group and again Katie and my dad took some long shots with no luck. The plan was for them to try trailing the deer they shot at and I would head back out to get the truck and come around the mountain to pick them up so they didn't have to walk so far. As I was hunting back toward the truck I jumped this 5 point and shot him before he went over the rise. I felt rewarded for all the work we had put in, but really wished it could have been Katie that shot the deer.
A couple day's later dad hit a three point running at 430 yards. I was able to find it and dad finished it off. I wish so badly that Katie had been with us that dad because we had some good shots at a few forkies, but she had to be back to school.
We may still be able to get a cow elk tag this year. Katie is really becoming a hunter. She is getting quicker and understanding the urgency associated with hunting. She works so hard at everything she does whether it is school, church, hunting, work, or being the world's best wife. I am so grateful that I have her in my life and that we are able to enjoy doing things together that have been so important to me throughout my life.
We are headed to the BYU-TCU football game this weekend. I hope I return with good news. I believe in my Cougars, but I will not be surprised with any outcome in this game.

Return to Silver City

I am back in Silver City again. Things have slowed down significantly so they let a few of us go out yesterday on a familiarization tour. Last time I was down I was able to go to the Cliff Dwellings. Yesterday we visited the other side of the forest and checked out the old mining town of Mogollon and The Catwalk.
We went to Mogollon first. http://www.rozylowicz.com/retirement/mogollon/mogollon.html Mogollon is found at the end of a sketchy one lane road cut into the mountain. With the monsoons we have been having there was quite a few washed out areas on the road. It was definitely worth the drive. Tucked into the deep canyon was a neat old mining town. My favorite part was the replica Billy the Kidd Wanted Poster. http://www.nndb.com/people/113/000108786/ Last time I was down here I had to watch Young Guns, maybe I will need to watch Young Guns II this time to get the full experience.
Silver City was the hometown of Billy the Kid. http://www.southernnewmexico.com/Articles/Southwest/Grant/Silver_City/SilverCity.html
I hope I have time to get to the museum on one of my lunch breaks. It has hours that don’t always jive with my work schedule.
Our second destination is a place called The Catwalk. In the 1930’s the Civilian Conservation Corps built a hanging walkway trail following the path of an old pipeline (built in 1893) along the path the river has cut in Whitewater Canyon. The trail has since been updated and climbs 1.15 miles to the end of the path.
Along the trial you find huge boulders that have fallen and lodged themselves in peculiar arrangements. We thought it was a good idea to hustle back to the car when the first rain drops started to sprinkle. Locals know better than to even be in the area when rain is forecast. We found out that when it rains sometimes the large rocks are displaced and have accounted for some injuries. We were also told that there have been times when the rain falls upriver and tourist have been stranded in the canyon because the water level rises so quickly with the flash floods. We were safe and had an enjoyable hike, other than some shin splints from our hastened downhill assent.
I am ready to get back home, even though we will not be there very long before our next adventure to Ely…

August 2009

Well, we sure did do a lot in the past four weeks. When I returned from Silver City Katie had a welcome home fruit pizza waiting for me. It was delicious! It was so nice to be back home with her. Two weeks is a LONG time! I had a few days off and was right back to work.

The same week I came home was Katie’s finals week. She worked so hard this semester and it really paid off. She EARNED all A’s for the second semester in a row. Her final semester at BYU-I will begin in September. It will be so nice to have a break before she starts her grad program at ISU.

Katie’s birthday was on the 27th of July. I jumbled together a little surprise party for her at Porter Park. So many of our friends and family were able to make it. The biggest surprise was when her mom and dad showed up. She had no idea about the party, but really was not expecting to see her mom and dad. It was indeed a sacrifice for them to come all the way up on a Monday night. It was so nice that they made it a priority and were able to be there for Katie.

I could not believe that a year had gone by since we were married. What a great year it has been. There is only one character flaw that I have found with Katie, and that is her judgment in picking me to be with for eternity. I am so grateful to have her.

I took off work a couple hours early on our anniversary and we headed up to Island Park. I had rented a cabin for that night and gotten tickets for a dinner show at Macks Inn. I had also planned on doing some camping the next couple nights, but that was before I got the SNOW REPORT for that area! (and yes, it did snow.)
Katie was helping our friends (family in my book, I don’t care how far a stretch it is) Sheldon and Lori and their boys with their horses at the fair in Rigby. I called to tell her about the snow and that she would want to pack accordingly. When Lori’s parents found out we were going to be in Island Park they told us to just go use their cabin. We took them up on the offer and it was much appreciated because it was cold and wet.

We visited the Park and road mt. bikes at Warm River, went to mesa falls, and just enjoyed being with each other. It was kind of tough to come back and have to go to work.

We got home and started planning for our next weekend’s trip. My dad was able to draw an elk tag in the Salmon, area and was coming up to do some scouting of the area. We had a good time up there and were able to see some new country, and a lot more critters than we did in Yellowstone. We came back to Rexburg EARLY Tuesday morning so that I would have time to switch bags and catch a flight back to Silver City. That is right I am back in New Mexico. I was back up on the rotation and was able to pick up this assignment at the right time to be back to go to Ely for Blake’s blessing September 6.
I really didn’t want to leave again, but after I got the truck out of the shop and our two calibrations I had spent more than I made on the first trip. I am looking at it as blessing to have the opportunity to make some money instead of a hardship of having to chase after it.

Our lives will not slow down at all when I return. Off to Ely, GRE on the 9th, back to school on the 10th, BYU FOOTBALL, dad’s elk hunt, our deer hunt, bird season… I would say things might slow down in Jan. but it sounds like we will have a wedding to attend and I’m sure we will be out on the ice dragging fish out of the hole…

Sorry that this is so long. I will be surprised if anyone reads this novel, or if any of it actually makes any sense.

Silver City Play Day

My time is coming to an end in Silver City. I am so ready to be back home with my wife. I will say that the OT I have racked up will be nice though it is already spent. We have had all kinds of weather since I have been here. I think there has only been one day without lightning. There have probably been about 20 starts, but only a few have gotten bigger than an acre. It has been just busy enough that I am not way stressed and not bored out of my mind.

I got to go out yesterday and do a "Forest Familiarization Tour". I would have liked to do more but I have been working nights and had already worked for 1:00 a.m. and didn't leave tell 8:00 on my tour. I did try to get as much in as I could in six hours.

I started my trip driving through the town of Pinos Altos. It is an old mining town just a few miles out of Silver City. Here is a link if you are interested in more of the history of this neat little town. http://www.southernnewmexico.com/Articles/Southwest/Grant/PinosAltosthenandnow.html

I continued down the windy narrow road through towering Ponderosa Pine trees. I saw about a dozen mule deer. Nothing big but it was nice to see some critters. I also happened upon two separate sightings of road runners, but no coyotes. Some other wildlife found on the Gila include wolves, elk, bear, cougar, mule deer, and couse deer.

I finally made it to the Gila Cliff Dwellings inhabited by the Mogollon (Muggy-own) Indians. Mogollon Indian farmers built these cliff dwellings between 1270 and 1290 A.D., using them for no more than 40 years before abandoning them. The ruins lie in natural cave-like recesses that are at least 150 feet above the canyon floor. They bear a marked resemblance to the Mesa Verde ruins of the Anasazi Indians, who enjoyed widespread influence. I found it interesting that the dwellings were so well hidden from below. It was a nice mile round trip hike. I am glad I got there before the 95 degree temperatures did. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gila_Cliff_Dwellings_National_Monument

Just down the road from the Cliff Dwellings were some Pictographs. I really couldn't find much history on them as far as any meaning. They were pretty neat. I did learn that they used the husks of the yucca plants as paint brushes to paint on the walls.

I ended my trip at the Santa Rita Mine. A large open pit copper mine in Santa Rita, in southwestern New Mexico, connected to a smelter seven miles south in Hurley. Together these facilities employ about 1,200 people, when operating. The Santa Rita Mine is one of the oldest continuously operating mine in the West. It has been operated by the Chino Mines Company, Phelps Dodge, and Kennecott. A natural landform called the Kneeling Nun, a hillside said to resemble a kneeling nun in profile, looms above the open pit. The town of Santa Rita was moved to make way for the mine.

I will be leaving out of El Paso Monday morning.

Logan, July 4th, and Silver City...

So, I know that I always talk about how crappy of a blogger I am but today I really blew it. I thought that i had saved my post but it isn't there. It was a really big post as well. I am too lazy to do it all over again so you will just get a quick rundown, or kind of quick.

We were able to go to Logan a week and a half ago to be at our friends Steve and Nancy's wedding. It was a great ceremony and we were so happy to share their day with them. We stopped in Malad on the way down and back and were able to visit with the Gilgen's. We were able to get in a ride up North Canyon one night. It was nice since I haven't been on my bike for over a year.

We raced back home so Katie could get her homework done for the next day. She has been doing so well in school. She was so worried about Chem, but she is kickin butt and has gotten A's on all her tests so far. She only has 2 weeks left this semester. She will be off for 7 weeks before she returns for her last semester at BYU-I in the fall. It will be nice to have more than an hour or two a day to spend with each other. I am not looking forward to her going to grad school.

I put up a few pics off my cell of things I forgot about. I was going to put the broken Pyrex up before but it was a sensitive subject for Katie. She had been slaving over dinner and I was out in the garage reloading or working on the boat or something, she came out in tears. I thought something horrible had happened. I went into the house and saw the mess on the floor. It reminded me of a Brad Paisley song cause I thought it was kind of funny but sure didn't share that with her at the time. I think that she was more distraught about the dish than dinner. It was a personalized wedding present from Aaron and Laura that had a BYU Y on it and our name. It is something we can now laugh about.

I had to work on the 4th which was sad for Katie because it is her favorite holiday. Even though I was gone, she still managed to run in the 5K, bring me lunch, attend a parade, clean the house, do her homework, and start building two baby blankets... She is pretty much amazing!

I was able to get off work early because I had to get ready for an unexpected assignment to Silver City New Mexico. We went to the Rexburg Rodeo and watched the fireworks, then went home and lit a few of our own off that we had around from last year. We tried to get some sleep since I had to leave the house at 0500 the next morning but the neighborhood fireworks kept us up most of the night.

I will write more about my time in Silver City later....

Two Days With No Rain!!!

Well, somehow during the three or four week rain storm we were able to do a little fishing and camping. We had gone out a few weeks ago and no sooner did we get the boat on the water we were rushing to beat the hurricane. The next week I went out after work with my buddy Jason and we started catching a few a we got nailed by a storm. I got soaked from the waist down. I will remember in the future to bring rain gear for everyone on my boat so I don't have to share mine...

Anyway, Katie has been itchin to go fishin and campin for quite a while. We went out last Friday after work and she was able to catch her first Bass. She actually caught three. The first one was probably the fattest that we have pulled out of Ririe. We camped out that night and went back in the morning and caught two more bass and a little trout. So we ended up with six and one, but were only able to keep the two that Katie caught. Katie had to go back to town to take a test so I broke camp alone and just in time before the rain started up again. We hit a pretty good window there.

I keep learning about these smallmouths and I think I might be getting better at catching them. I just wish we had a lake close by that had a little better population.

We are going to Logan and Malad for the weekend. We have some good friends getting married on Saturday in Logan and will spend the rest of the time in Malad. Katie's family is having a reunion while we are at the wedding but we hope to be able to see everyone for a little bit before and after.

Can't Believe It's June!

I wonder if there is anyone I could outsource my blogging to. I will take the pics but need them to post stuff and make it look nice...

Anyway, we have been busy like always. Seems like there is always something with work, school, and play. With my job I don't see things slowing down much for quite awhile. I was able to get the boat out last week for a day and caught about a dozen small mouth bass. We hope to get back out this weekend and get some more. I love catching and eating them. We fried em up on Monday and they were delicious.

Over Memorial Day weekend we were able to meet up with my family at Aaron and Laura's house in Spring Creek, Nevada. Everyone was there except for my dad. We had a really good time. We went swimming, shooting, and took a drive up the canyon to see the spring runoff waterfalls. On our way back to Idaho we stopped in Tooele to put flowers on my great grandparents grave. It was nice to be able to stop in there. It had been quite a while since my last visit.

I was really close to my great grandma (Grammie). She helped me raise me. I remember her teaching me how to tell time and tie my shoes. Whenever I brought her a book she would take the time to site down and read it to me. When I got a little bit older (8-9), Grandpa Lyle hired me to water and mow the lawn at their house in Ely that Grammie lived in. I spent most of my summer days with her. As she got older and was on oxygen, we decided that when grandma and grandpa were out of town I would stay the nights with her. I did that for about two and a half years until she passed away Christmas day 1996. I will never forget the special times that we had together, and the all the stories she would share. She was such a strong hardworking selfless woman. A trait that she passed down to her daughter that was passed down to my mom. I will always hold my relationships with my grandparents close to my heart.

My First Wild Turkey

Well, after a lot of stress, hard work, and calling in the expert, I was able to bag my first wild turkey. My dad was going to be in SLC this week so I invited him to come up to Idaho to do some calling for me. We worked pretty hard all day but could only find hens (story of my whole hunt). We finally spotted some gobblers and decided to move in a little closer. It was nice to have dad there running the call so all I had to do was stay still. Dad was sitting a little higher and saw one bird sneak (no gobbling) through the grass that I couldn’t see. Then another bird came along and all you could see was the neck up due to the tall grass. I am not sure exactly how far away it was but at least an honest 45-50 yards and about 20 minutes after sunset. Dad whispered to me, “Are you sure it’s a gobbler?” And about as soon as he said “er,” “BANG, FLOP, FLOP, FLOP.” I could see the color in his head and was sure it was a male, but I had to play with dad a little bit. He said, “Are you sure it was a gobbler?” And I said, “You said it was a gobbler.” He thought that I may have just heard the part where he said it is a gobbler not the are you sure part. When I brought him back over it was no question it was a gobbler. He had nice (not huge) spurs, a nine inch beard, and weighed 19 pounds. Not the biggest turkey, but pretty nice for my first bird.

Thanks KUPI 99...

Thursday when I was driving to work Katie called and told me she had won a 99 second shopping spree at the local grocery store. I tuned in just in time to hear her on the radio. So that night we went through and scouted everything out and schemed multiple plans not knowing what the rules were. Well, yesterday we found out that she didn't win but was put in a drawing to win... So we went down this morning and cased the place out in case her name was drawn. She did her crinkle the paper up trick so that it gets picked and sure enough she was the third name. Our main plan revolved around electronics, drugs, meat, detergent, and the mother load $200 gift cards to Home Depot. As luck would have it most of those things were off limits and you could only get 3 of each TYPE of items. So she ended up with 2 packs of $30steaks, a big ham, 3 blocks of cheese, 3 large bottles of Tide, 3 loaves of bread, two oranges, 3 packs of batteries, a SD Card, a jump drive, case of Mt. Dew, a cake, 2 oranges, 1gal of punch, and an Azalia flower that she picked up for a mothers day gift for our neighbor friend. It all totaled 302.99. Not too bad since she wasn't able to get about half of the things she had planned for.

My Quarterly Update...

Well, I guess that I am never going to be able to turn this over to Katie. I don't know how she doesn't have time to update it while she goes to school full-time and works 20 hours a week... Anyway, let me try to update you on what we have been up to for the past few months.

Lets start in November. Things finally slowed down for me at work and it was nice to get back to 40 hour weeks. Well, it was nice to be home but only getting 40 hour week pay wasn't as nice.
Katie had Thanksgiving week off from school and so I took a few days off and we headed to Spring Creek to meet up as Fishers for a feast. We all piled into Aaron's beautiful house. They have put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into their home and it has really turned out quite nicely. The Ruby Mountains are in their back yard and serve as a nice sunrise view. While we were there we took a couple trips up the canyon and were able to see a lot of Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep as well as some Mountain Goats. It was really neat to be able to get so close to the sheep. I know that Aaron's boys really enjoyed it and will always remember sneaking up on those powerful creatures. One of the best parts of the trip was on Saturday when Aaron baptized his oldest son Jacob. It was nice that we could all be together to witness and support Jacob in this big step.

December was pretty mild for us in Rexburg. We were able to get out of town before the big storms hit. We met up with Aaron in Ely then traveled to Vegas and met up with my good friend Rod for the 2008 Vegas Bowl. It was the fourth in a row for Rod and I. I took Katie last year and Aaron was able to make it the year before. It was a quick trip. Got into town at about noon on Saturday and gone by 9 a.m. Sunday morning. We didn't get the results that we would have liked but really enjoyed our time together. Rod and his wife Janene have been friends of mine since I was a freshman at Ricks College in 1998/1999. They are true friends and have been so good to me through the years. Rod is one of my few friends that I can always count on for anything.

Katie and I spent a couple more days in Ely after the game and had a little early Christmas with my parents and Becky's family. We headed up to Malad on the 23rd to spend the rest of our break with Katie's family. We had a really good time there and were very spoiled. Katie's mom and dad are very good about getting thoughtful presents. Other than on my mission and my first Christmas, it was the first time that I hadn't had been home for Christmas Day. It was nice to be with my new family and partake in some of their traditions. The only down side is that I was pretty sick the whole time and spent a lot of time in bed.

We headed back up to Rexburg the day after Christmas to try to fill our cow elk tags. We had a pretty hard time because the early winter was so mild that a lot of the elk had not made it to their winter range which happened to be where our tags were. On the last morning Katie spotted some and we tried to get into a shot but we had a little buck fever and lost the opportunity and before we could get on them again they had escaped onto the INL site where we couldn't chase them. Smart little buggers. It was a good experience even though we were not successful. I think we both learned a lot and will be better prepared next season.

January was kind of a rough month. I was laid off from the Forest Service and struggled finding work for a few weeks. Don't get me wrong, I was happy that I got to go ice fishing and work on some projects (i really could get used to not going to work if i won the loto or something), but money got pretty tight. We did have some good luck come our way when I was able to pick up some work for my old boss Randy. I worked for Randy while I went to college. He was always so good to me back then, and continues to be now. He happened to be building some more storage unites on one of his properties and needed some help so I was able to get about 5 weeks in before I got brought back to the FS in mid February.

Katie has been getting to be quite the markswoman. I think in the right conditions she could definitely out shoot me. One issue we have had is that some of my pistols are a little big for her hands and do not offer her a real option for use outside of target practice under the "best" conditions. I have been looking on-line and doing a lot of research and found what I thought would be a good option for her (i actually quite like it for myself). The Ruger SP101 5Shot Revolver. Well, at about the same time we decided that was the right gun for her one showed up for sale in Utah. It just so happened that it was about the same time as the BYU-utah B-ball game in Provo. What a great weekend it ended up being. We stayed with Katie's parents Friday night and they cooked up a feast and sent us off with a big breakfast on Saturday morning. We stopped in Ogden on the way down and picked up her gun. I was so proud of her because she was the one that called the guy and made the deal etc. She had the biggest grin on her face as we got into the car. We then continued on to SLC and met up with my buddy Rod. He had scored us a ticket to the game so all I had to to is pick up another one for 10 bucks. We were able to get ourselves into 10th row seats at about the mid-court line. It was a great game to watch and we had so much fun taunting the dirty puke players.

I think the next week was the longest week ever. I couldn't wait to get Katie out and watch her handle her new piece. Of course Saturday morning was wicked cold and windy with snow flurries but that didn't stop us. Katie was very impressive with her shot placement and got me a little worried about ever ticking her off...:) I am excited to spend more time out practicing with her as the day's get warmer. Another highlight of the day was seeing a cow moose and her calf just a quarter mile out of town in a field. I have seen a few around here but never that close to town. I took some pics and got about 40 yards away and they didn't seem too concerned with me. I didn't go any closer because I have always been a little afraid of getting my butt kicked by a momma moose.

I guess that catches us up for another few months. I am sure we will have some more exciting things to post as it starts to warm up. O, Katie's sister had her baby at about 3:30 this morning. He was a healthy 7lb 8oz. We are so excited to go see him later today.
